An agent prices your own truck, record and routes; GEICO quotes can land above or below these ranges.

GEICO's commercial truck insurance serves owner-operators, commercial drivers, and small fleets of up to 9 vehicles, and it lists hot-shotters among the businesses it helps. Getting a quote is easier when you know a few things up front: which trucks GEICO will cover, which company really stands behind the policy, and how much liability the law requires.

Trucks and operations GEICO covers

GEICO's truck page lists the vehicle types it can find coverage for:

  • Dry vans
  • Refrigerated trucks
  • Flatbed trucks
  • Auto haulers
  • Dirt, sand, and gravel trucks

For-hire carriers, who move freight belonging to other people, are covered. So are private carriers, who only haul their own goods and never work for hire. The page also explains that your rate can depend on how well you follow USDOT rules, the kind of cargo you haul, the type and condition of your truck, and how your inspections have gone.

Who stands behind a GEICO commercial auto insurance policy?

The company named on your policy takes on the risk and pays claims when they are covered. GEICO's commercial FAQ notes that policies are underwritten by Government Employees Insurance Company. Sometimes, though, GEICO Insurance Agency, LLC arranges the coverage instead. The policy then comes from National Indemnity Company or from an insurer outside the GEICO family.

Because of that, your policy paperwork might show a company name that isn't GEICO. The company named on your policy is the one that handles your claims.

Coverage types in a truck policy

  • Dually and gooseneck stopped on a highway shoulder with hazard lights on behind a car with a crumpled bumperLiabilityPays for injuries and damage your truck causes to other people. The federal minimum is $300,000 to $5,000,000.

  • Dually pickup pulling an empty gooseneck flatbed on a prairie highway in the morningNon-trucking liabilityCovers a driver working for a trucking company who uses the truck between loads, off the job.
  • Dually pickup with an empty gooseneck hitch and no trailer on a highway on-ramp at duskBobtailCovers a truck you drive for a trucking company when it has no trailer, such as a pickup heading home after dropping a load.
  • Dually pickup hitching another hauler’s gooseneck flatbed at a gravel drop yardTrailer interchangePays for damage to a trailer you pull for someone else under a written trailer-sharing agreement.

Owner-operators: leasing to a carrier or running your own authority

GEICO has a section on its truck page for owner-operators who hold a permanent lease to a motor carrier. During the lease, the carrier needs exclusive possession, control, and use of the truck for the whole term. The carrier's insurance filing covers you while it dispatches you. You still need non-trucking liability or bobtail coverage, and you also need physical damage coverage for the truck you own.

Running under your own authority means your insurer must send proof of your liability coverage to FMCSA. GEICO says it usually completes your insurance filings after your call. That matters, because a federal deadline applies. After your authority application is posted, the insurer must file within 20 days, or the application is dismissed by FMCSA.

Hotshot trucks and cargo coverage

Among the trucking businesses it insures, GEICO lists hot-shotters and expediters. GEICO's cargo page lists dually pickups as for-hire vehicles that often need cargo coverage.

Cargo coverage attaches to a commercial auto policy through an endorsement. An endorsement is a simple add-on that alters or expands your main policy. That way, you buy one truck policy and add cargo to it. Here are a few rules to know:

  • Motor truck cargo coverage may not be offered in all states.
  • Goods you own yourself are not covered by cargo coverage.
  • Trailers over 3,000 pounds gross vehicle weight are not covered automatically unless the policy lists them. Gross vehicle weight refers to the trailer together with everything loaded on it.
  • Refrigerated loads may include reefer breakdown coverage. It covers spoilage if the refrigeration or heating unit suddenly breaks down by accident.

Federal rules do not require freight carriers to carry cargo insurance. Still, many brokers request it.

How much liability coverage your truck needs

Federal minimum limits vary with your truck's weight rating and the cargo you carry. Your truck's weight rating is the most it can safely weigh when loaded, including the truck itself, as set by the manufacturer. Many brokers want limits above what the law requires.

Your operationRequired minimumCommon broker request
For-hire freight across state lines, fleet made up of vehicles rated below 10,001 lbs$300,000$1,000,000 in liability, plus $100,000 in cargo
For-hire freight across state lines, weight of 10,001 lbs or more$750,000$1,000,000 in liability, plus $100,000 in cargo
Placarded hazmat, oil, or hazardous waste at 10,001 lbs or more$1,000,000None listed
Cargo such as explosives, poison gas, radioactive materials, or bulk hazmat carried in tank vehicles$5,000,000None listed

Brokers such as C.H. Robinson, along with TQL, Uber Freight, and Amazon Relay, want $1,000,000 in auto liability plus $100,000 in cargo coverage. Haul only inside one state and that state sets your minimum.

Box trucks

Box trucks are not named on GEICO's truck page among its vehicle types. Dry vans are listed, and private carriers hauling their own goods are covered. Your box truck might fit one of those groups, though you will want to confirm that when you request a quote.

A box truck rated at 10,001 lbs or more that crosses state lines must have a USDOT number. Federal liability minimums apply to box trucks just as they do to every other truck.

  • Dually pickup with a loaded gooseneck flatbed at a truck stop at duskDually with a gooseneckA pickup with double rear wheels and a trailer that hitches in the truck bed. Most are rated 10,001 pounds or more together, so the minimum is $750,000.

Questions from truckers

Does GEICO offer commercial truck insurance?

Yes, GEICO sells commercial truck insurance. Yes, you can start a quote online or call (866) 509-9444 to speak with a truck insurance specialist. GEICO also notes that licensed truck insurance specialists can help you put together the right coverage for your needs. The policy may come from Government Employees Insurance Company or from one of GEICO's partner insurers.

Is GEICO a good choice for commercial insurance?

GEICO's truck page lists the company's A++ financial strength rating from A.M. Best. That rating describes how well the company can pay claims. It says nothing about price or service. Keep in mind that GEICO's truck page is aimed at fleets of up to 9 vehicles. If you run more, ask whether they can still help.

Which company offers the cheapest commercial truck insurance?

Nobody is cheapest for every carrier, because every truck, driving record, and cargo mix gets rated on its own. Published averages can give you a rough starting point:

Carrier typeMonthly averageSource
Hotshot truckers buying commercial auto$896 each month, or $10,757 yearlyInsureon
Hotshot business owners, general liability$32Insureon
Truckers in specialty trades$734Progressive Commercial
Truckers in the transport sector$926Progressive Commercial

Getting more than one quote and comparing them shows you which price is lowest for your own operation.

What does $1,000,000 in liability insurance cost for a truck?

There is no published price for $1,000,000 in truck liability by itself. The $896 monthly hotshot figure covers commercial auto coverage as a whole. Your own price comes down to the truck you drive, the cargo you carry, your inspection history, and how well you follow USDOT rules. On a separate note, a new operating authority comes with a one-time $300 FMCSA fee. The 2027 Unified Carrier Registration program charges $55 when you run 0 to 2 trucks.
