Hudson Insurance Group's trucking insurance is built mainly for large fleets with 200 or more trucks, for owner-operators and the carriers they drive for, and for regional trucking firms in Western and Midwestern states. It also runs a Mexican border program in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Because Hudson works with brokers and program administrators, you buy through an agent rather than going straight to the company.

Hudson trucking insurance programs

On Hudson's commercial auto page, the company states that it underwrites 3 commercial auto products on its own:

  • Fleet trucking
  • Independent contractors
  • Specialty auto

There is also a local and intermediate trucking program plus a Mexican border transfer program. One program administrator handles the local and intermediate program.

AM Best gives Hudson Insurance Company an A+ (Superior) rating with financial size category XV, beginning July 1, 2026. The same A+ rating appears for Hudson Excess Insurance Company on Hudson's financial strength page.

One detail often trips people up. The site hudsontruckinginsurance.com belongs to a different trucking insurance agency that says it can connect drivers with more than 50 carriers. That agency is separate from Hudson Insurance Group.

Who does Hudson's trucking insurance cover?

Large motor carriers with over 200 power units qualify for the fleet program. A power unit means the truck or tractor doing the pulling, not the trailer behind it. Fleets in this risk-sharing program share the risk with Hudson: the trucking company pays the first $100,000 or more of each claim itself, and Hudson's coverage reaches up to $2,000,000 including that amount. Brokers across the U.S. can offer Hudson's fleet products.

Coverage types in a truck policy

  • Dually and gooseneck stopped on a highway shoulder with hazard lights on behind a car with a crumpled bumperLiabilityPays for injuries and damage your truck causes to other people. The federal minimum is $300,000 to $5,000,000.
  • Steel pipe strapped down on a flatbed trailer with yellow ratchet strapsMotor truck cargoPays for the load you haul if it is damaged or stolen. Most brokers ask for $100,000.
  • Dually pickup with a dented front fender in a truck body shop bayPhysical damageRepairs or replaces your own truck and trailer after a crash, fire or theft.
  • Dually pickup pulling an empty gooseneck flatbed on a prairie highway in the morningNon-trucking liabilityCovers a driver working for a trucking company who uses the truck between loads, off the job.
  • Dually pickup with an empty gooseneck hitch and no trailer on a highway on-ramp at duskBobtailCovers a truck you drive for a trucking company when it has no trailer, such as a pickup heading home after dropping a load.
  • Dually pickup hitching another hauler’s gooseneck flatbed at a gravel drop yardTrailer interchangePays for damage to a trailer you pull for someone else under a written trailer-sharing agreement.

Fleets can also get an MCS-82 surety bond from Hudson, and it satisfies the carrier's FMCSA financial responsibility requirement.

Owner-operators and motor carriers are the customers named for the independent contractor program.

Trucking firms that haul dry van, flatbed, logging, refuse, or refrigerated freight, and similar trucking firms, fit the local and intermediate program. That page lists 23 Western and Midwestern states, while the main commercial auto page lists 22 and leaves out Nevada, so check with your agent about whether your state is included.

Program-by-program limits for Hudson commercial auto insurance

CoverageWho qualifiesHighest limit
Fleet truckingCarriers with fleets of 200 to 2,000 units$2,000,000 maximum; the carrier retains at least $100,000 of its own risk
Independent contractorsMotor carriers and owner-operatorsNon-trucking, unladen, and bobtail liability, each with a $1,000,000 cap
Local and intermediateFirms hauling dry van, flatbed, logging, refuse, or refrigerated freightPrimary liability of up to $1,000,000

Owner-operators also receive truck physical damage and occupational accident coverage through the independent contractor offering.

Non-trucking liability for drivers who lease on

If you lease on, the carrier must have exclusive possession, control, and use of the truck you lease for the full term. While the carrier dispatches you, its filing protects you. Outside those dispatch hours, you still need coverage for your own truck.

Non-trucking liability applies when you drive your truck for something other than carrying freight for the carrier. Hudson offers this coverage with limits of up to $1,000,000.

Driving the tractor with no trailer attached is what bobtail liability covers. Hudson writes it for owner-operators who lease on permanently, again with limits up to $1,000,000. The program also includes unladen liability, for driving with an empty trailer, at the same top limit.

How do I reach Hudson Insurance Company to file a claim?

Hudson says you can report claims 24/7 by phone or online under the independent contractor program. For commercial auto generally, Hudson's claims page offers an online first-notice-of-loss link; use it to make the initial report after an accident or loss.

Common questions

Who handles my claim on a Hudson commercial auto policy?

Each product line has its own claims staff.

What federal liability minimums apply if I operate under my own authority instead of leasing on?

It comes down to your truck's weight rating and the cargo you carry between states.

Cargo typeMinimum liability
General freight, a fleet of only vehicles rated under 10,001 lbs$300,000
Freight hauled by a vehicle rated 10,001 lbs or more$750,000
Hazardous waste and other listed materials, including oil$1,000,000
Bulk tanks or hopper-type vehicles carrying hazardous substances$5,000,000

Brokers including C.H. Robinson and TQL often request $1,000,000 in auto liability plus $100,000 in cargo coverage, which sits above the federal floor.

How much does truck insurance usually cost?

Hudson doesn't publish prices. As a rough guide, small hotshot operators pay about $896 a month ($10,757 a year) for commercial auto insurance, though large fleets and leased-on drivers will see very different numbers. An agent can tell you what you'd actually pay.
