Cargo van insurance

If you use a cargo van for work, you'll usually want cargo van insurance in the form of a commercial auto policy rather than a personal one. In 2025, Progressive Commercial published national averages of $260 to $276 each month for vehicle groups that include vans. The liability limits you should choose come down mainly to the van's weight rating and whether you haul your own goods or someone else's. - Progressive's 2025 averages for vehicle groups that include vans: $260 to $276 a month - For-hire interstate carriers of non-hazardous goods whose fleet has only vehicles under 10,001 lb: federal minimum liability of $300,000 - For-hire interstate carriers of non-hazardous goods with a vehicle rated 10,001 lb or above: federal minimum liability of $750,000 - Cargo limits commonly seen for van carriers range from $100,000 to $300,000 in protection

Progressive Commercial

Cargo van insurance limits by weight

Progressive calls a cargo van typically without side windows, with 2 front seats and a roomy cargo area in the back. Start with the weight rating on the sticker inside the driver's door, marked GVWR, when you work out how much liability cover to buy. GVWR tells you the heaviest the van may be once it's fully loaded.

The 10,001 pound mark is the one to watch, and one model name can land on either side of it. Mercedes-Benz offers the Sprinter 2500 cargo van starting at 9,050 pounds and the Sprinter 4500 reaching up to 12,125 pounds. Read the sticker on your own van instead of trusting the model name.

Once a van reaches 10,001 pounds and does business across state lines, it needs a USDOT number. Hauling freight for others across state lines for pay also calls for operating authority. That authority is the federal go-ahead to haul for hire, and the one-time fee comes to $300. You don't need operating authority for runs that move only your own products or tools.

Your situationFreight carried across state linesFederal minimum liability
For-hire fleet of only vehicles under 10,001 lbNon-hazardous general freight$300,000
For-hire van rated 10,001 lb or aboveNon-hazardous general freight$750,000
For-hire van rated 10,001 lb or abovePlacarded oil or hazardous waste loads$1,000,000
Private carrier or for-hire operationExplosives, poison gas, radioactive materials, or bulk tanks of hazardous substances$5,000,000

Stay within a single state, and that state decides your liability minimum along with the filings your insurer must make.

Coverage types in a truck policy

  • LiabilityPays for injuries and damage your truck causes to other people. The federal minimum is $300,000 to $5,000,000.
  • Motor truck cargoPays for the load you haul if it is damaged or stolen. Most brokers ask for $100,000.
  • Physical damageRepairs or replaces your own truck and trailer after a crash, fire or theft.
  • Non-trucking liabilityCovers a driver working for a trucking company who uses the truck between loads, off the job.
  • BobtailCovers a truck you drive for a trucking company when it has no trailer, such as a pickup heading home after dropping a load.
  • Trailer interchangePays for damage to a trailer you pull for someone else under a written trailer-sharing agreement.

Do you need commercial insurance for your cargo van?

You need it whenever the van brings in money. Deliveries, trade work, and hauling for a company all count. Progressive notes that even self-employed van delivery drivers may need their own policy, since a personal auto policy offers the wrong sort of protection.

When one van handles both work and everyday errands, GEICO advises you to tell the insurer about business use from the start.

Before you buy cover for a single freight app, find out where the loads come from. Amazon Relay explains that cargo vans are not accepted for Relay loads.

What cargo van insurance costs

None of the insurers in these sources gives an average for cargo vans by itself. The closest available figures cover broader vehicle groups, vans among them.

Covering the goods you haul

Liability pays for injuries or damage you cause to other people. Cover for the load itself is separate and protects the goods. Freight carriers face no federal cargo insurance requirement, with one exception for household goods movers.

The companies hiring you often lay down their own rules. DAT advises cargo van carriers to hold roughly $100,000 to $300,000 in cargo coverage. Brokers including C.H. Robinson and TQL want $1,000,000 in auto liability, plus $100,000 in cargo coverage.

The cheapest cover is the cover your work actually requires.

Other truck types

  • Start with your weight rating. For-hire vans under 10,001 pounds carry a $300,000 federal minimum. Once a van is rated 10,001 pounds or above, the minimum rises to $750,000.
  • See if operating authority applies. Moving only your own tools or goods means you can skip it, along with the federal filings it brings.
  • Match broker limits only when brokers set them. The amounts brokers often quote, such as $1,000,000 in liability coverage and $100,000 in cargo coverage, come from broker rules rather than federal law.
  • Cover several vans under one policy. GEICO lets you put up to 9 eligible cargo vans on a single policy.
  • Tell the insurer about business use. GEICO suggests telling the insurer up front if the van is used for both work and errands, so the policy fits how you really use it.

Not every big insurer sells this cover. The Hartford, for example, has no cargo van product and sends visitors to Tivly instead.

Progressive's commercial van cover and loose tools

Under Progressive's standard commercial van policy, the van itself and any gear fixed in place, such as ladder racks and shelving are covered.

Tools and equipment sitting loose inside the van fall outside that protection. For those items, Progressive points you toward inland marine coverage, and you can add it to a general liability policy or a business owner's policy. This coverage protects movable tools and equipment that go along with you.

Should your van be off the road while you rent or borrow a different vehicle for business use, hired auto coverage can step in. It gives liability protection for business vehicles you lease, hire, rent, or borrow.

Questions carriers often ask

What do cargo van and hotshot pickup policies cost?

Hotshot truckers pay an average of $896 a month for commercial auto. Progressive's $260 and $276 averages cover broader vehicle groups that include vans, so they don't show what a cargo van policy typically costs.

What cover do I need for a cargo van that hauls broker loads?

Plan for more than just auto cover. Along with auto liability and cargo, some freight platforms also want $1,000,000 in general liability. Amazon Relay, though, doesn't take cargo vans for its loads at all.

What does $100,000 of cargo insurance cost?

These sources don't publish a standalone price for $100,000 of cargo cover. Your quote decides what you pay. Brokers most often ask for that amount.

What does a $1,000,000 liability insurance policy cost?

No single published price exists for $1,000,000 of auto liability. General liability is a different policy, and hotshot businesses see an average premium of $32 a month for it.
